According to BMI, "Registering your copyrights is not required but it is highly recommended
since doing so will give you certain protection under copyright law in
case you need to sue someone for using your song without your
permission."
Additionally, "A songwriter or composer is the creator of a work, which is a song, score or other musical composition. A publisher, on the other hand, is an individual or company that owns or administers the copyright of a work."
As a singer/songwriter, I have had difficulty in the past, fully registering some of my music because I did not list a "Publisher" on my application. The Rose and The Bee Music was created to fulfill that part of the songwriting process for myself but we also support unsigned, independent songwriters who need a Publisher to register their work.
